In the early days, "Kokutani" was promoted by the Daishoji clan around 1655. The discovery of pottery stones in the Kutani mines led Kaga clan member Saijiro Goto to Arita in Hizen to learn pottery techniques, and he built a kiln in Kutani, which is said to be the first kiln in Old Kutani. Old Kutani was strongly influenced by the opulent and gorgeous aesthetic of the Kaga Hyakumangoku culture, and developed a unique and powerful style. However, the old Kutani kilns were suddenly abandoned around 1700. The cause of this is still unclear. About 80 years after the abandonment of the kiln, the Kasugayama kiln was opened in Kanazawa around 1806 under the management of the Kaga clan. This was the era of the revival of Kutani, and a number of kilns emerged, including the Mokubei style of the Kasugayama kiln, the Yoshidaya kiln, which was established by the Daishoji clan to revive old Kutani in the area of the old Kutani kilns, the Iida-ya kiln, which produced red-painted fine drawing from the Miyamoto-ya kiln, and the Eiraku kiln, which produced gold brocade. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), Western-style paints were used to produce paintings. In the Meiji period (1868-1912), the Shouza style of colored gold brocade using Western-style paints became famous and was exported, establishing itself as an industrial Kutani.
